Overall, while God Emperor has been hugely reviled as boring and difficult, I can personally attest to its enduring power. His musings about the life they could have had, had he been human are sad and put into scope the level of his sacrifice for the continued survival of the human race. One of the most beautiful scenes in the book is Leto’s encounter with the Ixian embassador,Hwi Noree in whom he recognizes a kindred spirit, a soul-mate. Leto’s futile feelings of falling in love, losing his sensory ability as a human (water burns him) and his powerlessness at being caught between past and present, tyrrant and saviour, is poignantly captured by Herbert’s sympathatic narrative. God Emperor shows how no matter how lofty an empire’s ambition, eventually they all must bow before the crushing wheel of time. He speaks in this bored, detached voice that can get slightly preachy at times but you never lose sight of the fact that here is this human being, slowly being enmeshed into the sandworm that is merging with his mind and body. All of our favourite characters from the original trilogy make appearances, of sorts, becoming aspects of Leto’s personality, as he is the living embodiment of the genetic memories of all his anscetors.Īs a narrator, Leto is a complex character.
While the first three books in the series were narrated more or less as parallel events, God Emeperor takes place in a vastly different future. Fair warning, it is not an easy book to digest unless you have had some previous encounter with the desert-world of Arrakis and its turbulent history with House Atreides.
